As a Grateful Dead fan, you sometimes have to dig deep into your pockets. This self-titled live album by the Jerry Garcia Band was reissued in 2021 as a 5-LP set, but that easily costs between €120 and €150. Since I try to keep complete concerts in my collection (and this album is a mix of several concerts from 1990), I decided to give it a few digital spins first. Frankly, I'm a bit conflicted. There are songs where Garcia sounds fantastic and approaches his peak performance with the Grateful Dead, but there are also songs that are completely off the mark. I was thrilled with Simple Twist of Fate when I saw the setlist, and yet this performance is truly a slow burn. Which is strange, because the Jerry Garcia Band features some truly strong musicians, including John Kahn on bass. His solo during Simple Twist of Fate, however, is awful. The tracklist is full of Dylan covers, including Tangled Up in Blue, I Shall Be Released, and Señor (I've always considered the latter an underrated Dylan track, so I'm glad Garcia and co. dug it up), but there's even a side step to the Grateful Dead with Deal and to The Band with The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. So, a lot of personal heroes, and to be honest, I'm always a bit biased. I do prefer those Garcia Live releases though: I'm more drawn to them.
