Playing in the Band, Seattle, Washington, 5/21/74 (2018) [Grateful Dead]

I'm not entirely up-to-date on the various Record Store Days, but in 2018, November 23rd was Record Store Black Friday. Not to be confused with the regular Record Store Day (which was on April 21st, 2018), but in honor of the Black Friday edition, Rhino released this Playing in the Band album. It's an LP that contains exactly one track: Playing in the Band. This track, which can already be found on the official releases Pacific Northwest '73–'74: The Complete Recordings (2018) and Pacific Northwest '73–'74 (2018) boxsets, has now been released separately because it's the longest uninterrupted version of a song the Grateful Dead have ever played. They usually throw in a Drums of Space track or play another song in between, but here it's one long jam. You can take that literally by the way, because I think only about five minutes in total (divided between the beginning and the end of the song) is truly recognizable as Playing in the Band. A fine version, Donna haters will probably be annoyed by that characteristic scream, but this is more of a curiosity if you ask me. It does feel weird to release the longest uninterrupted version of a song specifically on LP, because that kind of defeats the gimmick...

Tracklist:
  1. Playing in the Band
  2. Playing in the Band [Continued]
