Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It (2012) [Grateful Dead]

I always think it's fun that the Grateful Dead makes some sort of cheaper version when they release another monumental box set. It would be even cooler if those box sets were affordable at all, but we shouldn't count on that. The “normal” Spring 1990 box set contains no less than 18 CDs (and two years later Spring 1990: The Other One was released, which contains no less than 23 CDs. When you put the two together, you have the complete Spring tour in your possession) and at the same time this So Glad You Made It was also released. A selection of songs from a specific period of shows (March 16 to March 30) collected on two discs. And what two discs! I've always been a big Brent Mydland fan, so I'm already happy with Easy To Love You and Blow Away. The latter in particular is played in a really great version here, it seems as if Mydland is releasing all his devils and I always get goosebumps from that “take that fist and shove it in the air”, but also the opener Let the Good Times Roll is just really cool. I'm always a fan of songs where everyone contributes a verse of the lyrics and it immediately sets the right vibe. In terms of setlist, also a great release including two Rolling Stones covers (It's All Over Now and The Last Time), Jack-A-Roe (I've always known this as a Jerry Garcia song because he regularly performed it solo, but I actually have no idea under which band to classify this. In any case, it is one of my all-time favorite songs) and of course the usual suspects such as Loser, Scarlet Begonias, Morning Dew and Not Fade Away. The title of this CD is of course inspired by Gimme Some Lovin' and that is also an absolutely fine cover. In any case, you hear a band that simply has a lot of fun playing and that is also so well attuned to each other. The way they support Brent after his break halfway through Blow Away... I can just imagine Garcia looking approvingly over his glasses at Mydland. The two of them together are always a pleasure to watch and listen to.
